AI Computers Built with Human Brain Cells? Now You Can Rent One!

China stepping up on Elon Musk's toes and much, much more inside!

Talk about developments this week! Hear this one out…

Swiss startup ‘FinaSpark’ has created a service where we can rent highly-efficient AI-trained computers made from real human brain cells.

Yupp.. You read that right… from real human brain cells. Hmm

These computers rely on dopamine—a chemical found in the human body—and electrical signals to process data, and can ‘live’ up to a 100 days!

More on this below. Here are the top stories this week in the AI & tech sphere.

  • AGIBOT Challenges Tesla in the AI Arena

  • FinalSpark’s Biocomputers Are Made From Human Brain Cells

  • California’s AI Safety Bill Gets a Major Overhaul

  • Wyoming Mayoral Candidate Pledges to Govern with ChatGPT

AGIBOT, a Chinese robotics startup, has launched five new humanoid robots, directly challenging Tesla’s upcoming Optimus bot. Their flagship, Yuanzheng A2, stands at 5'9", weighs 121 lbs, and can perform precise tasks like threading a needle. AGIBOT plans to ship 300 units by the end of 2024, boasting superior commercialization and cost-control compared to Tesla.

China isn’t stopping there. Unitree, another major player, has also introduced its G1 robot, ready for mass production with upgraded features. The US-China rivalry in AI and humanoid robotics is heating up, with China’s tech giants making rapid advancements, leaving the world watching to see who will dominate this robotic race.

Swiss startup FinalSpark has launched a groundbreaking service, allowing scientists to rent cloud access to "biocomputers" made from human brain cells for $500 a month. These organoid-based systems can "live" and compute for up to 100 days, using dopamine and electrical signals to train AI models, mimicking natural brain processes. FinalSpark claims these biocomputers could be up to 100,000 times more energy-efficient than traditional AI systems.

This innovation could revolutionize AI by reducing its massive energy consumption. However, it’s also venturing into ethically murky waters. The use of brain organoids for computing raises questions about consciousness and the moral implications of biocomputing. As this technology progresses, it’s poised to spark significant debate about the future of AI and bioethics.

California’s SB 1047, an ambitious AI safety bill, has been revised after pushback from AI companies like Anthropic and open-source developers. The updated bill now restricts the California attorney general from suing AI companies for negligent safety practices before a disaster occurs. Instead of requiring certifications “under penalty of perjury,” AI labs must only submit public “statements” about their safety measures.

The bill also lowers the standard for developers, requiring “reasonable care” rather than “reasonable assurance” that AI models are safe. As SB 1047 heads to the Assembly floor for a final vote, it reflects California’s attempt to strike a balance between fostering AI innovation and preventing potential disasters through practical, adaptive regulation.

Victor Miller, a mayoral candidate in Cheyenne, Wyoming, has promised to let his customized ChatGPT, dubbed Vic (Virtual Integrated Citizen), assist in running the local government if he’s elected. Miller programmed Vic by feeding it city ordinances and related documents to help make municipal decisions, proposing that the AI offers data-driven insights while he handles legal execution.

Despite OpenAI shutting down Miller's account twice for violating campaign policies, and concerns from Wyoming's Secretary of State, Miller's candidacy was allowed with only his name on the ballot. While Miller’s chances of winning are slim, this marks the first time a political candidate has openly embraced AI in governance. Whether Cheyenne is ready for an AI co-pilot in City Hall is uncertain, but it highlights the growing role AI is likely to play in politics.
