Here’s the latest from this week in AI:

  • Meta’s TRIBE Predicts Your Brain on Movies

  • OpenAI Model Wins Gold at Global Programming Olympiad

  • Sam Altman Promises Fixes After Rocky GPT-5 Launch

  • Google and NASA Build AI Doctor for Space Missions

Meta’s FAIR team has introduced TRIBE, a 1-billion-parameter AI model that can predict brain activity while you watch movies without brain scans. By analyzing video, audio, and dialogue together, TRIBE accurately forecasted activity in over 1,000 brain regions, outperforming single-sense models by 30%.

It showed strong results in areas where sight, sound, and language merge, as well as in frontal regions tied to attention, decision-making, and emotion. TRIBE could advance neuroscience and mental health research, but it may also be used to create content that captures attention more effectively, making endless scrolling even harder to resist.

OpenAI’s reasoning model earned a gold-level score at the 2025 International Olympiad in Informatics, ranking 6th among human contestants and first among AI. Competing under the same time and submission limits as top student programmers, the model solved complex coding challenges without any special programming fine-tuning.

It scored in the 98th percentile, up from 49% last year, and also claimed gold at the International Math Olympiad and AtCoder. This rapid leap in reasoning power signals how quickly AI is closing the gap with human competitors and hints at future systems capable of groundbreaking discoveries in science, math, and beyond.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and his team hosted a Reddit Q&A after GPT-5’s rollout frustrated users with glitches, low rate limits, and the removal of older models. A faulty autoswitcher made GPT-5 seem less capable by failing to route queries correctly, and a livestream “chart crime” went viral.

OpenAI is now rolling out fixes, doubling Plus user rate limits, and pledging more transparency and customization for future updates. Altman also confirmed GPT-4o will return for paid users after underestimating how much people valued its personality and emotional intelligence.

Google and NASA are developing the Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant, an AI tool designed to diagnose and treat astronauts during deep-space missions where communication with Earth is delayed. Running on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI with models like Llama 3 and Mistral-3 Small, it has reached up to 88% accuracy in diagnosing injuries.

NASA plans to expand the system with ultrasound imaging, biometric data, and training for space-specific conditions. Beyond space, the technology could also advance remote healthcare on Earth, bringing medical expertise to underserved and isolated communities.

In Other News

U.S. stocks climbed to new highs Tuesday after a softer-than-expected inflation report eased concerns over President Trump’s tariffs. While some goods exposed to tariffs saw price increases in July, others like appliances and apparel rose more slowly. Economists say tariff-driven inflation is likely to build over time but is far from the spikes seen in 2021 and 2022. Investors now see a higher chance of a Federal Reserve rate cut in September, which could further support markets.

The rally marks a sharp contrast to April’s steep sell-off following Trump’s “Liberation Day” tariff speech. Trump has since scaled back some of the harsher proposals and extended tariff deadlines, softening the immediate impact. Still, much of the market’s recent gains come from a handful of AI-focused tech giants, making the rally less reflective of the broader economy.
