Here’s the latest from this week in AI:

  • Microsoft's AI Diagnostician Outsmarts Doctors

  • Baidu Goes Open Source with Powerful ERNIE 4.5 Models

  • Meta Poaches More OpenAI Talent in Quiet AI Power Grab

  • Google’s Gemma 3n Brings Multimodal AI to Mobile Devices

Microsoft has launched the MAI Diagnostic Orchestrator, an AI system that tackles complex medical cases with striking accuracy. Paired with OpenAI’s o3 model, it solved 85.5% of cases correctly, far outpacing experienced doctors who averaged just 20%. The system mimics a virtual medical team, handling everything from diagnosis to cost control.

Beyond accuracy, MAI-DxO proved more cost-effective, spending $2,397 per case compared to $2,963 for physicians. By reducing unnecessary tests and improving complex diagnoses, this AI marks a major step toward what Microsoft calls “medical superintelligence.”

Baidu has open-sourced 10 versions of its ERNIE 4.5 model family, including a 424B parameter multimodal model that beats DeepSeek V3 on most benchmarks, despite being half the size. The lineup ranges from compact 300M models to massive systems, all freely available on Hugging Face under Apache 2.0.

The models use a unique architecture that lets text and vision features enhance each other for better efficiency. This marks Baidu’s first open-source release, signaling a shift in strategy as China’s AI race heats up. With ERNIE 4.5 challenging top U.S. models, Baidu is making a serious play on the global stage.

Meta has now hired eight researchers from OpenAI, including key contributors to major models like o1 and GPT 4.1. A new WSJ report reveals CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally leading the charge, maintaining a secret list of top AI talent and offering huge pay packages to lure them in.

Inside Meta, execs reportedly coordinate recruitment in a group chat called “Recruiting Party,” while tensions rise, Meta’s CTO even called Sam Altman “dishonest” over recent remarks. With staff memos and deleted tweets surfacing, Meta’s raid may be reshaping the balance of AI power more than OpenAI wants to admit.

Gemma powers real-time video analysis at 60 fps on Pixel phones and supports speech-to-text in 35 languages. Its larger version, E4B, is the first sub-10B model to break a 1300 score on LMArena. This launch signals a leap toward smarter, on-device AI for everyday users.
