Alibaba Launches Advanced Open-Source Video Model Wan2.2

Alibaba’s Tongyi Lab has released Wan2.2, a powerful open-source model for text-to-video and image-to-video generation. It uses two expert modules, one to create scenes and another to add fine details, allowing for high efficiency and quality output. Wan2.2 outperforms top models like Seedance, Kling, and Sora in aesthetics, text rendering, and camera control.

Trained on significantly more data than its predecessor, Wan2.2 handles complex motion and visual elements with greater precision. Users can customize lighting, color, and camera angles for cinematic results. The release reflects China's growing open-source momentum in AI, offering a strong alternative to Western closed-model strategies.

China Pushes for Global AI Cooperation

China proposed an AI action plan focused on open-source development and global collaboration at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference. It calls for joint research, open data sharing, and AI training for developing nations. Premier Li Qiang proposed a global AI body to prevent domination by a few countries.

Unlike the U.S. plan centered on competition and deregulation, China emphasizes security and shared governance. By promoting inclusion and working with the UN, China positions itself as a cooperative alternative in the global AI race.

Meta Hires Ex-OpenAI Scientist to Lead Superintelligence Push

Mark Zuckerberg has appointed former OpenAI researcher Shengjia Zhao as chief scientist of the new Meta Superintelligence Labs. Zhao brings deep experience from working on ChatGPT, GPT-4, o1, and other top-tier models, and will help steer Meta’s next-gen AI research.

Zhao will work closely with Meta’s chief AI officer and report directly to Zuckerberg. His hiring caps a summer of aggressive AI talent acquisition by Meta, signaling that its superintelligence lab is now fully primed for launch.
