OpenAI on Track to Human-Level AI?

Controlling a robot from the comfort of your home might not just be Sci-Fi anymore..

In partnership with

OpenAI has created a new five-step plan to track how close they are to making AI as smart as humans…

Currently, at Level 2, after chatbots and reasoning skills, Level-5 AI would be able to run entire organizations!

But more on this in a bit. Let’s check out the top 4 AI stories of this week.

  • OpenAI’s New Scale Tracks Path to Human-Level AI

  • Mind-Reading AI Recreates What You’re Looking At

  • ‘Open-TeleVision’ Avatar-Inspired Technology For Controlling Robots Remotely

  • AI Training On YouTube Without Consent

OpenAI has unveiled a new five-tier system to chart its progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), providing a clearer vision for achieving human-level AI. The tiers range from Level 1 (current chatbots) to Level 5 (AI running entire companies). Currently, OpenAI’s technology sits at Level 1 but is edging towards Level 2, known as 'Reasoners.'

A recent demonstration of a GPT-4 project displayed human-like reasoning skills, indicating progress towards this next stage. Level 2 AI aims to solve basic problems comparable to a PhD-level human, while Level 3 envisions agents taking actions for users.

Researchers at Radboud University have developed an AI system that can reconstruct accurate images of what someone is looking at by analyzing their brain activity. Using fMRI scans of humans and direct electrode recordings from a macaque monkey, the team captured brain activity while viewing images. An enhanced AI system then learned which brain areas to focus on, significantly improving the accuracy of the reconstructions. In an example, the top row shows what the monkey saw, while the bottom row shows the AI's reconstructions.

Lead researcher Umut Güçlü describes these reconstructions as the most accurate to date. Despite some limitations, such as using pre-existing dataset images, this research is groundbreaking.

Researchers at UC San Diego and MIT have launched Open-TeleVision, an open-source system that lets users control robots remotely, much like in 'Avatar.' Accessible from any web-enabled device, including VR headsets, it offers real-time stereo video for depth perception and precise object manipulation.

The system features an active neck with inverse kinematics, allowing the robot to mirror the operator's movements intuitively. Plus, it's fully open-sourced, so researchers can access and modify the code.

A new investigation by Proof News reveals that Apple, Anthropic, Nvidia, and Salesforce trained their AI models using content from over 170,000 YouTube videos without creators' consent. The "YouTube Subtitles" dataset, compiled by EleutherAI, includes transcripts from over 48,000 channels.

Creators were unaware, and using this data violates YouTube’s terms of service. Apple used it for training AI features for iPhones and MacBooks. While this raises ethical concerns and potential PR issues, legal consequences for these companies remain uncertain.

Bitcoin has surged back to reclaim its short-term holder realized price, signaling potential for significant upside. The cryptocurrency is now testing a critical bull market trendline after losing it for the first time in nearly a year back in June.

According to CryptoQuant data, Bitcoin's price action around $64,582 is pivotal, as it reflects renewed confidence among short-term holders who are now in profit. This group's buying behavior historically provides strong support during bullish phases, a trend observed since Bitcoin's latest bull market began in early 2023.
