Your Deleted Chats Might Not Be Gone: OpenAI Battles NYT in Court

Apple Plays it Safe, UK Uses Google AI for Housing Plans, & Claude Gov for U.S. Intelligence

Here’s the latest from this week in AI:

  • Apple Plays It Safe with AI at WWDC 2025

  • UK Taps Google AI to Fast-Track Housing Plans

  • Chat Privacy Clash: OpenAI Fights NYT Data Retention Order

  • Anthropic Launches Claude Gov for U.S. Intelligence Use

At WWDC 2025, Apple showcased new features like Live Translation for real-time language support in Messages and FaceTime, visual search that analyzes on-screen content, and smarter Shortcuts powered by ChatGPT. A new “Workout Buddy” on Apple Watch offers personalized coaching using real-time health data, and developers can now tap into Apple’s on-device AI without cloud fees.

While these additions mark progress, Apple’s AI rollout felt cautious. With rivals aggressively pushing next-gen AI, Apple’s upgrades seemed more like supporting features than headline innovations, fueling the sense that 2025 is indeed Apple’s AI “gap year.”

The UK government and Google have launched “Extract,” an AI tool powered by Gemini, to digitize millions of planning documents and cut down delays in housing and infrastructure approvals. Using Gemini’s multimodal abilities, Extract can read messy maps, handwritten notes, and dense files, compressing two hours of human work into just 40 seconds.

Currently in trials with local councils and set for national rollout by Spring 2026, Extract aims to help hit the UK’s 1.5 million home target by freeing planners from manual drudgery. It’s a standout example of AI delivering real-world impact by modernizing outdated systems rather than reinventing them.

OpenAI is challenging a court order in its legal battle with The New York Times that requires it to retain all ChatGPT user conversations, including those users deleted. The order applies to millions across free and paid tiers, excluding Enterprise, Edu, and API users with zero data retention agreements.

The Times pushed for preservation over concerns users might be copying its content and then deleting the evidence. CEO Sam Altman criticized the demand as setting a “bad precedent” and floated the idea of “AI privilege” akin to doctor-patient confidentiality. The case raises big questions about privacy just as AI becomes deeply woven into daily life.

Anthropic has introduced Claude Gov, a customized version of its AI model built exclusively for U.S. defense and intelligence agencies. The model is designed to handle classified information, with lower refusal rates and enhanced understanding of complex military and intelligence data.

Already in high-level use, Claude Gov supports tasks like foreign language analysis and cybersecurity threat detection. While Anthropic preserved bans on weapons design and disinformation, the move highlights how AI is becoming deeply embedded in national security, forcing labs to balance ethics with government demand.
